Medical Freedom Champion Jair Bolsonaro Wins TIME’s 2021 Person of the Year Readers' Poll


 

Bolsonaro celebrated the vote and asked Time to 'respect the result'. Voted 'Person of the Year' by popular decision, the president expects the US magazine to confirm the nomination

President Jair Bolsonaro publicly gave thanks for the more than 2 million votes he received in the Time magazine poll which named him "Person of the Year".

As reported by
Oeste, Bolsonaro received 24% of the vote, finishing ahead of former US President Donald Trump (9%). In third place came the frontline health professionals in the fight against covid-19 (6.3%). A total of more than 9 million votes were cast in the poll.

In a message posted on social media, the president thanked him for his support and took the opportunity to congratulate Trump for second place.

“We hope that Time Magazine grants us, in fact, the title, respecting the election results. Our compliments to Donald Trump for second place,” wrote Bolsonaro.


According to the American magazine, the "Person of the Year" is the person (or persons) who
"for better or for worse... has done the most to influence the events of the year".

Despite the popular vote having a weighing in on the final result, Time's “Person of the Year” must is decided by the magazine's editors. The final result will be announced on December 13th.

Time has published a special “Person of the Year” issue since 1927. The last ones chosen were Joe Biden and US Vice President Kamala Harris in 2020. In 2019, environmental activist Greta Thunberg was elected.
