Thursday, February 24, at 5 a.m., Russia attacked Ukraine. The Ukrainian army announced the death of 7 civilians and the disappearance of dozens of people, but said it had killed "nearly 50 Russian occupiers" in the east of the country. Russian defense officials in turn spoke of a rout of the Ukrainian army. Both sides cry manipulation.

Military areas targeted by Russian missiles

According to an Interfax correspondent in Donetsk, Russia conducted a large-scale military operation in Ukraine. It all started with missile strikes that hit points across the country. The Russian military targeted various Ukrainian military installations located in particular in Odessa, Mariupol, Kiev, Mikolayev and Kramatorsk. Air force bases in Vasilkov were also affected.

Donbass came under heavy artillery fire and explosions and gunfire took place in the Borispol area at Kyiv's main airport. Ukrainian news agency UNIAN also reported that Russian troops entered Kharkiv.

The strikes reportedly caused at least 7 deaths in Odessa and Mariupol. The police also announced that dozens of people were missing. Finally, part of Odessa is currently without electricity.

Information denied on both sides

Adviser to the President of Ukraine Oleksii Arestovych confirmed that this is a large-scale attack. Ukraine's military infrastructure was targeted, but the damage was minimal, he said. Indeed, they would not risk affecting the combat capabilities of the Ukrainian military.

CNN footage showing Russian tanks crossing the Ukrainian border from Belarus has been released. Note that the separatists of Donetsk and Luhansk, in eastern Ukraine, have launched an offensive to control the entire territory.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov clarified at midday that “the duration of the operation would be determined by its results and its relevance”.

On RT media, defense officials even evoked a rout of the Ukrainian army by declaring “intelligence shows that Ukrainian army and military units are leaving their posts en masse, laying down their weapons“. Information denied by Kiev, there is no direct evidence at the moment to verify the veracity of this statement.

Still according to Russian officials, “There is no threat to the civilian population. A number of military targets, including airfields, defense installations and aircraft, were hit by high-precision weapons.”

For his part, on BFMTV, the Ukrainian ambassador to France, Vadym Omelchenko, denounced this Russian offensive which, according to him, is a “massive attack against Ukraine, a war”, and which would has caused “many
civilian victims."

The Ukrainian army says it killed “about 50 Russian occupiers”, destroyed six Russian military planes and four tanks, claims that are currently unverifiable and denied by Russia.
