The Empire Doesn't Protect Its Allies: The True Meaning of the Israeli Strike on Damascus

July 19th

Hello everyone.
I'm Peiman Salehi, a researcher and analyst based in Tehran, and thank you for being here.

Today, I would like to share with you some thoughts on a recent event in the Middle East, an event that, in my opinion, reveals much more than the Western media is letting on.

On July 16, 2025, Israel struck a Defense Ministry building in Damascus, belonging to the government of Mohammad al-Jolani.

This attack cannot be seen as a simple military act or a targeted operation. It is, in fact, a profound strategic message. And to understand it, it must be placed in the broader context of the Middle East today.

We are in a very unstable phase of regional history. Between the normalization of relations between certain Arab states and Israel, the end of American unipolarity, and the emergence of a multipolar world with actors like Iran, Russia, and China, every military gesture becomes meaningful.

And it is in this context that this Israeli strike must be interpreted.

Let's now talk about Mohammad al-Jolani. He is a well-known figure: the former leader of Jabhat al-Nusra, affiliated with al-Qaeda, he was for years a declared enemy of Damascus... and yet, today, he is presented by some Western media as a "moderate" political actor, even as a possible partner.

His government, discreetly but genuinely supported by Western powers, is clearly part of the pro-American paradigm.

And here, a question arises: why would Israel bomb a regime that appears to be part of the Western camp?

The answer is simple, but disturbing: the Empire has no permanent allies. He has only interests. And when a pawn becomes useless, uncontrollable, or simply inconvenient, he can be sacrificed. Even if he has served well.

In the case of Syria, the real objective is not to bring down this or that government. The objective is permanent weakening. It is fragmentation. To prevent any reconstruction of a sovereign Syrian state.

For years, we have been witnessing an attempt at balkanization: dividing the country along ethnic, religious, and political lines.

This time, the Druze cause serves as the pretext. But behind it, the same agenda is present: preventing any strong state from joining the axis of the Resistance.

Moreover, since Jolani's arrival, Syria has moved away from this axis—the Tehran-Baghdad-Damascus-Beirut axis. This seemed to satisfy the West... but clearly, even that guarantees nothing.

Because even a regime that appears "cooperative" can be punished. Submission won't confer protection.

And this is the real lesson for the entire region: following the rules of empire doesn't guarantee security.

What imperialism wants in Syria is not peace. It wants a divided territory, a weak government dependent on foreign aid, and above all, a Syria cut off from all ties to Palestine, Hezbollah, or Iran.

It's also a laboratory for testing models of regime change. And the next on the list could well be Iran.

In conclusion, I would say this: chaos is not an accident. It is organized, desired, sometimes justified in the name of human rights or security.

But if you dig a little deeper, you see a plan for domination.

And to resist this is already to refuse to believe this narrative. It is to want a different interpretation.

Thank you very much for listening to me. If you found this analysis useful, I would be happy to continue this type of format.
