On Wednesday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum signed a decree banning the import, manufacture, and commercialization of 35 “highly dangerous” pesticide molecules that jeopardize food production.

“By the end of today, some pesticides will be prohibited in Mexico… Some of them are used in many parts of the world, but there was no ban on their use here. There are pesticides that cause great harm to health and the environment,” she said.

Agriculture Secretary Julio Berdegue specified that 35 molecules will no longer be permitted for use in his country. “Never in Mexico’s history has a ban on this type of product of this magnitude been enacted,” he stated, recalling that the last prohibition of hazardous products occurred in 1991, when authorities banned 21 molecules.

Berdegue asserted that this first group of banned molecules includes those identified in the international Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions.

“All these molecules are banned in one or more countries or regions with which Mexico has active food trade,” the Agriculture secretary said, citing the use of Carbofuran as an example.

While it is banned in Canada and Europe, Carbofuran is used in Mexico on coffee, cotton and avocado crops. The new regulations also affect the commercialization of Endosulfan, a molecule banned in 50 countries.

Berdegue announced that a second group of banned products will be unveiled in the first half of 2026, and a third group will be established in 2027.

“These products must have much stricter control and regulation because certain products cannot be used as if they were aspirin,” he emphasized. “Mexico seeks to have a much cleaner, more sustainable and safer agriculture for our population,” Berdegue stated.
