Israel says daily Lebanon strikes 'just a preview' if Hezbollah not disarmed

The US has backed Israel’s recent threats and says Lebanon faces a new war if the resistance does not surrender its weapons

The violent airstrikes on Lebanon this week were “just a preview of what is to come” if Beirut fails to disarm Hezbollah, an Israeli official told Hebrew news outlet Channel 12 on 7 November.

“If the Lebanese army does not disarm Hezbollah and fails to meet the demands of the ceasefire, Israel, with US backing, will attack Hezbollah targets across Lebanon, including in Beirut,” the official added.

Israel carried out a violent wave of airstrikes on south Lebanon on 6 November.

Airstrikes hit residential areas in the towns of Kfar Dounin, Zawtar al-Sharqiya, Aita al-Jabal, Tayr Dibba, and Taybeh. The Israeli army claimed it struck “terrorist infrastructure” belonging to Hezbollah, yet hit areas near supermarkets and a pharmacy.

The Channel 12 report came a few hours after Israeli artillery shelling targeted the southern Lebanese town of Yaroun.

Fires also broke out in the Khiam plain earlier on Friday due to Israeli attacks.

Over 300 people have been killed by Israel since the ceasefire agreement was reached on 27 November 2024.

Since the start of last month alone, at least 37 Lebanese people have been killed by Israeli strikes.

The new escalation coincides with Israeli claims that Hezbollah is repairing and refilling weapons stocks, and is managing to smuggle in arms and equipment from Syria.

In August, Beirut adopted a cabinet decision to fully disarm Hezbollah by the end of the year, following months of heavy pressure from the US. Hezbollah rejected the decision.

The resistance said it would eventually be willing to discuss incorporating its arms into the Lebanese military as part of a defensive strategy that would keep the weapons available for use if Lebanon is attacked.

However, it rejects any discussion of the matter while Israel continues to attack Lebanon and occupy several areas along the southern border.

Tel Aviv refuses to adhere to the ceasefire deal by withdrawing and stopping its attacks, saying Hezbollah must disarm first. Washington has publicly backed Tel Aviv’s position.

US envoy Tom Barrack recently warned that Lebanon faces a new Israeli war if it does not immediately disarm the resistance.

Hezbollah issued an open letter to Lebanese government officials on Thursday, reaffirming its right to armed resistance against occupation and calling on Lebanon to reach a “unified and dignified national stance” to Israel’s daily attacks and ceasefire violations.

The resistance slammed and rejected US calls for direct talks between Lebanon and Israel, which it described as “negotiation traps” that would “only grant further gains to the Israeli enemy.”

“As a founding component of Lebanon, which we have pledged as a final homeland for all its citizens, we reaffirm our legitimate right to resist occupation and aggression, and to stand alongside our army and our people in defending the sovereignty of our country,” Hezbollah stressed.

During the Lebanese Cabinet session on 6 November, Army Commander Rudolphe Haikal proposed suspending the plan to disarm Hezbollah due to ongoing Israeli attacks, according to Al Jadeed channel.
