We have already explained in several previous posts that there are significant gas reserves off the coast of Gaza, which were discovered in 2000. 60 percent of them belong to Palestine. The BG (British Gas) group drilled two wells: Gaza Marine-1 and Gaza Marine-2.
The company estimates reserves of about 1.4 trillion cubic feet, which are valued at about $4 billion, although these could be much larger.
The question of sovereignty over the Gaza gas fields is crucial. From a legal perspective, the reservations belong to Palestine. The death of Yasser Arafat, the election of the Hamas government and the ruin of the Palestinian Authority allowed Israel to establish de facto control over gas reserves off the coast of Gaza.
The BG group is in contact with the Tel Aviv government and ignores the Hamas government regarding the rights to exploit the fields.
In 2006 British Gas “was on the verge of signing an agreement to transport gas to Egypt.” British Prime Minister Tony Blair intervened on behalf of Israel to circumvent the agreement with Egypt.
The military occupation of Gaza aims to commit a major robbery, by transferring sovereignty over the gas fields to Israel, all in violation of international law.
