The Italian government recently announced the demand for a mandatory vaccination passport in both the public and private sectors, and stipulates that workers who cannot show the vaccination passport will have their salary withheld.

The government decree will force some 23 million Italian workers to obtain a “green pass”, a certificate of vaccination against COVID-19 that is issued to those who have been vaccinated, or have recovered from the virus or have tested negative in a recent test. Some fear that unvaccinated workers will be fired.

However, on Wednesday, the government announced that those who do not comply with the order should not report to work, but should not be suspended or fired. Instead, they will be considered on unexcused absence and their wages will be withheld.

The new vaccination regulations will go into effect on October 15th and will last until December 31st.

Those who are discovered working without the vaccination passport may be sanctioned with fines of up to 1,500 euros. In addition, the government said it will not bear the costs of the test for those who prefer not to get vaccinated. Pharmacies will charge 15 euros for the tests for adults and 8 euros for minors.

Those who have not recovered from the virus will have to receive both doses of the vaccine, while those who have recovered from the virus will get the green pass after receiving the first dose.

In Italy, the violation of civil liberties is not the only concern raised by the vaccination passport. The Green Pass also tracks location, which could violate privacy laws.
