Paris: anti-Macron protesters seize HQ of BlackRock, the world's largest financial fund

April 8th

Demonstrators have stormed the BlackRock headquarters in Paris in protest against President Macron's pension reforms. With flares and smoke bombs, they entered the building raising banners while chanting slogans against Emmanuel Macron's government.

BlackRock is the world's largest financial fund and has been criticised for its role in managing pension funds and for imposing its political agendas on the corporations in which it is a shareholder, as well as for lobbying nation states.

The French government imposed a pension reform
by decree that has triggered criticism and widespread protests throughout the country. Protesters who stormed BlackRock's headquarters see the company as a symbol of loan sharking and corporate greed.

The protest comes at a time of growing discontent in France over government policies around social security and labour rights. Workers and unions have carried out ongoing strikes and demonstrations in recent months in protest against the rule of Emmanuel Macron, a former employee of the Rothschild bank.

Videos shared on social media showed protesters entering the Centorial office block, located near the Opéra Garnier opera house, holding red flares and firing smoke bombs.

“The meaning of this action is quite simple. We went to BlackRock headquarters to tell them: the workers' money, for our pensions, is being taken by you," said Jerome Schmitt, spokesman for the French union SUD.

Nationwide protests against the French government's plan to raise the retirement age for most workers from 62 to 64 have entered their 11th day. The government ended up appealing a decree to pass the controversial legislation, without a vote in parliament.

The incident at the headquarters of BlackRock is one more example of the discontent of the French population regarding the policies of the government and the large companies that benefit from them.

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to protest on Thursday. Likely in order to counter the critical domestic situation, France is about to implement a new measure to raise the age of military reservists. The expansion of the number of active troops is also expected to be announced at any moment.
