Uruguay: News of the legal suspension of experimental Covid-19 inoculations for children between the ages of 5 and 13 has already spread widely throughout the world. This brief is one such example, coming from the Belgian Agency and the RTBF, that is, the mass media state company in French-speaking Belgium. This is the most important Belgian media conglomerate, in the language of Molière, with 3 TV channels , various radios and websites. My contingent presence in Spain at this time meant that I received the news here, anticipated in a certain way by the optimism expressed by Dr. Gustavo Salle, with whom I had the pleasure of communicating by telephone on Tuesday morning, taking advantage of the fact that he he is also visiting the Iberian territory. This may or may not turn out to be a new victory against the odds ("maracanazo") but either way, the decision of Judge Alejandro Recarey has made noise throughout the world (LEV).
A judge ordered this Thursday the “immediate suspension” in Uruguay of the vaccination of children for Covid-19, pending the publication of the contracts between the Government and Pfizer, which will include the “composition of the substances” contained in the products.
In his ruling, Judge Alejandro Recarey said that the suspension (affecting children under 13 years of age) will be in force until "all purchase contracts for these vaccines" and the documents "detailing the composition of the substances to be administered" are fully published. Recarey, who functions as a substitute judge of an administrative court, made the decision before a "protective action" filed by a lawyer, aimed at suspending the administration of the vaccine in children. These vaccines are allowed in the country on a voluntary basis from the age of five. The government of conservative President Luis Lacalle Pou has announced that it will appeal the decision. According to the judge, it is necessary to "provide those responsible for minors who are vaccinated" with a document "that fully and clearly informs them" about the content of the injections, their benefits, the risks they entail "specifying their nature, their probability, its scope”, and the “adverse effects already detected, in their entirety”.
The contract between the Uruguayan government and the US laboratory Pfizer on the supply of vaccines has not been made public in the South American country of 3.5 million inhabitants. Before Thursday's decision, the government had questioned Judge Recaray's impartiality, noting that he had previously "given his opinions on the subject" of Covid-19 vaccination. The Health Ministry said on Twitter Thursday that the country's vaccination campaign was "based on the available scientific evidence."
