Glacial cold wave in the United States: 31 dead and 600,000 people without electricity

On March 20, 2000, The Independent newspaper reported that snow would disappear from our lives. This news wasn't invented by the editors but by David Viner, a self-proclaimed expert from the University of East Anglia (1), the oracle of modern climatology.

This winter has once again proven such prophecies wrong in the Northern Hemisphere. An extreme cold wave is gripping much of the United States. The low temperatures have already claimed 31 lives. A man has even been found unconscious in the snow, clutching a shovel (2).

The frigid temperatures, combined with snow and ice, have made travel dangerous and increased the risk of accidents. The reported deaths are believed to be related, according to available information, to various situations ranging from hypothermia to incidents on roads that have become impassable.

The extreme cold is affecting densely populated areas, exposing a large part of the population to immediate risks, especially the most vulnerable. Emergency services have been mobilized to help residents, particularly in areas where access to healthcare and heating has become more difficult.

The impact on infrastructure is considerable. Last night, nearly 600,000 homes were still without power, a direct consequence of the severe weather. Power lines damaged by frost, snow, or fallen trees caused widespread outages, leaving many homes in the cold and dark.

The power cuts further complicate daily life for people already facing very low temperatures. Without heating or lighting, some homes are in precarious situations, increasing health and safety risks. Technical teams are working to restore power, but the weather conditions are making the interventions lengthy and, at times, dangerous.

Much of the northern half of the United States will see temperatures that are “continuously below freezing through February 1.” Yesterday, the thermometer reached record lows across the South, accompanied over the weekend by winter storms and widespread power outages.
