'Kill Switch': Iran shuts down Musk's Starlink for the first time, according to Forbes

Iranian authorities have dealt a major blow to the destabilization process driven by Israel and the US by blocking access to Starlink satellite internet, a crucial tool, Forbes reported on Monday.

"We haven't seen this before. Iran's digital blackout has deployed military-grade jammers, reportedly supplied by Russia, to block Starlink internet access. This represents a radical shift for the emergency connectivity typically used by protesters and anti-regime activists when internet access is disrupted," the report states.

According to the report, more than 80% of traffic has been blocked, and the level of internet connectivity is now around 1% of normal.

This technological breakthrough, which degraded satellite traffic from an initial 30% to levels of 80-90% in key areas, marks a milestone in Tehran's ability to defend its control over the flow of information against external destabilization tools.

Channel 4 News describes Russia's activities as a "technological race with Starlink," which, it claims, "is known for deploying trucks that emit radio noise to disrupt satellite signals." "It has not yet been confirmed which technologies are being deployed," Forbes notes.

Following the total mobile and fixed internet blackout decreed on January 8, thousands of Starlink terminals, smuggled into the country and estimated to number in the tens of thousands, served as a bridge to coordinate demonstrations and disseminate images. The government resorted to GPS signal jamming (already active since the 12-day war with Israel in June 2015) and the direct disruption of low-Earth orbit links using high-powered equipment supplied by China, according to experts like Amir Rashidi of the Miaan Group. This military-grade technology surpasses basic jamming and causes massive packet loss, making continuous transmission impossible.

GPS signals are essential for the optimal functioning of Musk's company's satellite internet network, whose Starlink receivers use GPS to locate and connect to the satellites.

In the multipolar world, this episode reflects the dispute over technological sovereignty. Iran perceives Starlink, controlled by a US company, as a vector of foreign interference, similar to its use in Ukraine or previous attempts in Iran in 2022. The response strengthens emerging blocs seeking alternatives to Western-dominated infrastructure, from their own satellites to Chinese submarine cables. Western companies, such as Samsung, and Israeli espionage demonstrate that the corporate world is not "neutral" but rather responds to the geopolitical interests of their countries of origin.

During the Twelve-Day War with Israel, deliberate failures were recorded in the national internet network, coinciding with the activation of Starlink beams, as confirmed by Musk himself when he posted on the social network X: "The beams are on," just one day after the start of the Israeli offensive.

The coordination between private companies and military operations is generating concern in Iran, which has denounced a new pattern of hybrid warfare and technological sabotage.
